CBD research and studies: What do scientists say about using CBD to alleviate pain, improve sleep and cure inflammation?

Basing our claims on verified information is one of our priorities here at CBDium. Therefore, we closely monitor the developments in the scientific field in order to provide you with reliable information about the effects of CBD from trustworthy sources.

Today we have selected excerpts from three studies and articles concerning CBD, which we often refer to in our work. If you want to learn more, we recommend that you read the articles in the full original version in the attached links.

CBD for improved sleep

As you may already know, improved sleep is one of the timeliest and most reliable indicators that a CBD therapy is working well.

Evidence for the positive effects of CBD on improving sleep can also be found in a 2016 case study entitled Effectiveness of Cannabidiol Oil for Pediatric Anxiety and Insomnia as Part of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder.

The report from this case study begins with the authors stating that sleep problems and anxiety are often the result of post-traumatic stress disorder. This was also the case with a monitored patient, a 10-year-old girl who suffered trauma from sexual abuse. This trauma was also reflected in her sleep problems that was “restless, interrupted, and unable to sleep alone”.

As we quote from the study: “A trial of CBD supplements (25 mg) was then initiated at bedtime, and 6 mg to 12 mg of CBD sublingual spray was administered during the day as needed for anxiety. A gradual increase in sleep quality and quantity and a decrease in her anxiety were noted. After 5 months, the patient was sleeping in her own room most nights and handling the new school year with no difficulties. No side effects were observed from taking the CBD oil.”

The contribution of CBD to the improvement of this patient’s condition is also confirmed by the fact that the CBD therapy was not used in conjunction with almost any conventional therapy: “The strength of this particular case is that our patient was receiving no pharmaceutical medications (other than nonprescription diphenhydramine) but only nutritional supplements and the CBD oil to control her symptoms.”

The authors state: : “Cannabidiol oil, an increasingly popular treatment of anxiety and sleep issues, has been documented as being an effective alternative to pharmaceutical medications. This case study provides clinical data that support the use of cannabidiol oil as a safe treatment for reducing anxiety and improving sleep in a young girl with posttraumatic stress disorder.”

CBD for alleviating pain

The usage of CBD to alleviate pain was researched in an article from 2013 entitled The Endocannabinoid System, Cannabinoids, and Pain.

In connection with chronic pain the authors mention the interaction of the CBD therapy with other pharmacological remedies: “Indeed, in cases of intractable or difficult-to-control pain, combination therapy with small doses of opioid and non-psychoactive cannabinoid receptor agonists may be an alternative way to circumvent the undesirable side effects of opioids yet obtain far greater analgesic efficacy than achieved with cannabinoids alone.”

(*agonist – a drug that binds to the receptor and thus triggers or increases the activity of the cell)

The study concluded that: “the phytocannabinoids have efficacy in the treatment of various chronic pain conditions with greatest promise as a therapeutic adjunct in treating peripheral and central neuropathic pain and inflammation-mediated chronic pain.”

The authors conclude their research with these words: “Putting these pharmacologic, clinical, and societal issues together, the direction for the future resides in the development of orally administered, highly bioavailable, non-psychoactive phytocannabinoid products that also take advantage of the entourage effect, to provide the millions of people living with debilitating pain a comparatively safe and effective form of relief.”

CBD to cure inflammation

The influence of CBD on inflammation has been addressed in an article from as far back as 2011 entitled Cannabidiol as an Emergent Therapeutic Strategy for Lessening the Impact of Inflammation on Oxidative Stress.

“This review discusses recent studies suggesting that cannabidiol may have utility in treating a number of human diseases and disorders now known to involve activation of the immune system and associated oxidative stress, as a contributor to their etiology and progression.”

The diseases and disorders mentioned in the article include, for example, rheumatoid arthritis, type 1 and 2 diabetes, atherosclerosis, Alzheimer’s disease, hypertension, metabolic syndrome, depression and neuropathic pain.

The article came to the following conclusion: “Studies on models of human diseases support the idea that CBD attenuates inflammation far beyond its antioxidant properties, for example, by targeting inflammation-related intracellular signaling events.”
